1/25/2020 Update:
It is with great sadness that we have to share the news that our dear sweet Lucy has crossed the Rainbow Bridge. We know everyone’s first reaction is one of sadness and grief; however there is a silver lining to Lucy’s story. Lucy’s story started out like many Bulldog puppies, they are purchased and loved UNTIL they no longer can “provide” for their owners. In what should have been Lucy’s golden years, she was surrendered for no fault of her own. Her family wanted to put her down because they didn’t have the time for her. Lucy was a sweet Bulldog that wanted to be the center of attention and to be an only dog. Lucy appeared to be healthy (for her age) however, late last week she started having seizures. She was immediately rushed to an Emergency Vet (it was after the Clinic was closed). It appeared that she had some sort of infection that was causing the seizures. It also appeared that she may have aspirated fluids during her seizures. She had a very high fever and the Emergency Staff was not very optimistic. But Lucy had other ideas. Her will to live was strong. She rallied for a couple of days but ultimately her body was not strong enough to fight off the underlying issues that were causing the seizures. Several different medications were tried and antibiotics, but the seizures were getting more severe and more frequent. Lucy was telling us it was her time. All of this is very sad, but Lucy passed away surrounded by love and her foster family. Instead of being dumped at a cold, loveless shelter Lucy spent the last 1.5 years of her life living her best life. She was able to go on walks, car rides and all kinds of adventures. We are sure that Lucy felt more love in those months than she had in a LONG time. We all know loosing a Bulldog is a horrible thing but Dr. Seuss said it best “Don’t cry because it is over, Smile because it happened.” So please remember to keep Lucy’s foster family in your thoughts and prayers and smile because she was truly a great Bulldog, and may she enjoy her days running and playing at the rainbow bridge.
1/3/2020 Update:
Well hi bully friends. It’s me, Lucy (though “she” only calls me Schmoo now)
It’s been a busy few weeks with all the holidays but it’s been pretty exciting as I am now more comfortable with my Foster Mom and Foster sister. They treat me so nicely and I have already warmed up to them; I get excited when they get home and am even a little playful when I see my dinner coming – of course, sometimes I have to bark at them to remind them what I am waiting for.
I have also gotten better about walking when Mom or sis takes me outside. I don’t mind exploring…lots of good smells and sometimes I see other people who say hi to me. I also love going in the car. Sometimes I need a little help up for the higher cars but I sit like a good girl (especially if my window is open)
Foster Mom says she still cannot believe no one is running to adopt me as I am so cute. Hopefully you can see my beautiful Christmas picture on here…I did so well cooperating with my hat on…I know I look cute! Sadly no pix of me celebrating the new year but, as Mom says, Happy Schmoo Year everyone. I hope you come for me soon
XOXO and waddles,
Schmoo
12/5/2019 Update:
Hi friends…Lucy here. I wanted to tell you how well I am doing here with my new Fosters. They must love me very much as they call me Shmoo (my face is too shmooshy, they say).
I got here Saturday afternoon and quickly learned that all I have to do is walk up to them and they will scratch me and pet me. I think I am going to like this. We got to go outside but I am very quick about going potty…not one for long walks as I’d rather be relaxing on the couch (when they pick me up) or in one of my beds (I have 2 now – that’s so exciting)
I am so ready for my FURREVER home as I know I will be a great addition to any family. I get along with all people and even other dogs…as long as they don’t live with me and expect to share my toys! Won’t you consider adding me to your family?

Hello friends and family,
11/12/2019 Update:
Hello dear followers, Lucy checking in here!
11/6/2019 Update:
Lucy checking in and showing off my best napping pictures. The few last weeks were fun filled and ever since the birthday party, there’s a lot of napping to catch up with. I like to rest my head on the doggie bed but also enjoy the living room, this way I can keep an eye on all my toys. After a good nap, I like to visit the dog park and stretch my legs and explore around.
10/21/2019 Update:
“Lucy reporting in and sharing some of my 6th birthday party pictures. So the surprise party that I overheard foster dad whispering the week before came true. At first the birthday crowns were ticklish but I sure got used to it and even wanted a second one on my head. Some people say it’s a bit too much, but I like being extra!
10/7/2019 Update:
Hello Everyone!
8/26/2019 Update:
Lucy here checking in and reassuring that I’m doing very well. Everyday I’m on my best behavior especially when it comes to getting treats and food. I’ve discovered the joys and taste of fresh cut watermelon as you can see. Sitting down, getting my tongue out ready and then diving into the deliciousness in front of me is done best with eyes closed.

5/20/2019 Update:
This spring weather with so many showers has kept Lucy indoors so many times already, but when the weather is nice and the ground not too wet, Lucy is all about exploring the great outdoors.
She might not know all the rules to badminton, volleyball or basketball but sure feels comfortable just watching and sitting on the court or field.
After she has tired out her two-legged friends she gets to play with other four-legged ones in her doggie park.
Lucy is waiting on her forever family who enjoy her calm personality and friendliness.

4/15/2019 Update:
Another interesting week for Lucy, we had some cold and wet weather but once the sun came out Lucy got to go play and make new friends at the dog park.
Here she is amongst bigger and smaller dogs alike and stealing the show. She gets along well with the smaller and even bigger ones, as they circle around her and sniff hello.
Lucy is looking for a forever home.

3/25/2019 Update:
3/4/2019 Update: Lucy has a new hobby- home improvement! She is a fan favorite at Lowe’s and keeps a sharp eye out for slackers on the job. She gets a bit distracted with an occasional nap but overall has a bright future!
2/25/2019 Update: Lucy here! It was a great week. I’ve been going on lots of walks and sunbathing as much as possible. Car rides are still my favorite so don’t blame me if I try to crawl into every car I see!! I also love to be included in every conversation and promise to sit nicely at your feet. An occasional kiss would be appreciated!!
2/11/2019 Update: It has been a great week for Lucy. Little Miss had a trainer come by to learn some new manners. She has learned that if she gets along with Foster Brother, there are a lot more treats headed her way. Luckily bulldogs are food motivated which makes training them pretty simple. Just have to get past the stubbornness! She responds well when she is on leash and hasn’t given us one of her signature “flops” since the trainer came. She is learning that listening and getting along are much more fun!
1/31/2019 Update: Lucy here! FM was away this week so I got to hang out with a very nice new lady. She came over a bunch and scratched my ears just how I like… I have had a few accidents but FM thinks it’s because I don’t like going outside in the cold. I always tell her that I don’t have to go but…. maybe I do! We are working on it :). I am still trying to figure out this whole “playing” thing. I get so excited but I don’t know what to do with myself so I just hop around and snort at people. They always laugh and give me a bottom scratch so I think that must be right…
1/14/2019 Update: Lucy had a low key week. As always, Lucy just wants to be right by your side. While the little gal takes a bit of time getting up and down the stairs, she is always determined to be snuggled right next to her human. She sleeps with her legs pointed straight in front of her, with her head buried between them. With her face so squished (wrinkles ya know), the only way you can tell if she is awake is by her snores. It doesn’t get cuter than bulldog snores 🙂
1/3/2019 Update:
Lucy had a great holiday season, one of her best yet! Here are a few things we have learned about Ms. Luc: 1. While she looks adorable in sweaters, she prefers to go all natural. 2. Walks to the mailbox are more fun than most people think. 3. She jumps around like a bouncy ball when she’s excited. 4. Nothing beats bedtime snuggles.
12/16/2018 Update:
12/3/2018 Update: We love Lucy! This week was full of short walks, long snuggles, and Lucy’s favorite- car rides. She is a front-seat dog without a doubt and she’s happy to remind you by crawling her way to her proper place. Besides the car, her favorite place is curled up with any sleepy teenager she can find. She is particularly taken with Netflix and will watch for hours. Call the Midwife seems to be her favorite.
She gets VERY excited to go on walks, which to Lucy means about 4 doors down. Because of her age and her nails not being cared for in her past life, she walks very gingerly. Once she builds up speed however, she gets the biggest smile as she hurtles past. Inertia in action!
11/27/2018 Update: Lucy had a great week! She continues to settle into her foster family and shows her fun personality more and more. She doesn’t hesitate to make her wishes clear by throwing herself to the ground in protest. Don’t even think of cutting walks short, she will not have it! Besides walks, Lucy loves car rides. She turns into a puppy again when she can stick her head all the way out the window and feel the air in her ears. As of yesterday, she is now a ‘bed-dog.” More like a bed bug because as soon as she’s on the bed, she burrows under the covers, all the way to the bottom of the bed. The only evidence of her presence is her little bottom sticking out the top.
11/12/2018 Update: Another great week for Lucy. She has decided there is no better place on earth than lounging on her sofa. She loves to be with her humans, even if she doesn’t like to do what they ask. Lucy likes to do things on her time and because she is a mature lady, can’t be rushed. She gets where she’s going, eventually, and is always happy to be there. She gives everyone a big smile as she makes her way into the middle of the action. She loves to sleep in her dog bed right by her human with her head down, between her paws. She is so calm and sweet. Lucy will be best as an only dog and will make a family very happy!
11/5/2018 Update: “Lucy is loving life. She loves naps on the sofa with her foster family and car rides with the windows down. She doesn’t get around too quickly these days but never wants to miss out on the action, even if she watches from the sidelines. Once she has chosen her preferred napping spot, she will not be kept from it, and doesn’t mind if her foster humans rearrange things for cleaning…
While she likes to play hard to get, all attempts to “play it cool” are blown to smithereens when her foster family comes home. She leaps off her self-appointed throne and wiggles her way over to say hello. The wiggles are quickly followed by little hops of joy. Bottom scratches are quickly requested. She is a sweet sweet girl. A lady through and through, she has been known to snore. Lucy is going to be a great companion for someone!”
10/31/2018 Update: Well, hello there! I’m Lucy. I just want to tell you I am so glad to see sunshine, aren’t you? I am not much of an outside girl but it is nice to soak up some sunshine for 30 minutes or so.
I am feeling so much more at home now. I don’t want to rush a good thing, but I am not only getting on the couch, but now also and will sit close enough to get petted while we watch some tv. They tell me how soft my fur is and kiss my face which is kind of embarrassing but I could get used to it. It makes me even feel a little playful when I get some attention. I like to wiggle my butt and shake my head to show I like to play.
She is always wanting to take pictures of me. I am so shy that I turn my face and pretend she isn’t doing that.
I have definitely claimed my favorite chair but I did shake it up a bit by getting on the couch when no one was sitting there.
I get along ok with the female fur siblings but every once in a while they are in my face just a little too much and I let them know I am not that kind of girl. I like my space so I make a show of “fighting” but I don’t really use my teeth. I just make sure the other dog knows I like my space. The lady puts a pillow between us and then I calm down and walk away. I am doing it less as we all get to know each other. The male is pretty cool and he doesn’t bother me at all.
Have I told you I have a good figure. I really watch what I eat and truthfully I am not much of a breakfast dog. Sometimes I can go for something late morning, but if I don’t then I let her know by barking that I am finally ready around 5:00. She has been putting something new in my food that is supposed to be good for my joints. I don’t like it whole so she finally figured out to break it up in smaller pieces and I like it better. I am a small bites kind of eater.
Now treats are another story! I will take a treat of any size. I like the routine here where we get a treat after dinner. I know now that I have to sit and wait until she offers it. I only get it if I don’t jump for it. Then I get the treat and I get told what a good girl I am. That’s my kind of life!
Well it’s time for another nap so time to go for now. If you want a quite buddy then I may be the dog for you. Yawnnnnn. Let me know, but until then I am having a snooze.
10/24/2018 Update: Lucy had a good week. She is settling in and starting to feel more comfortable. She is such a shy girl that it has taken a little longer for her to feel more confident ( and a little longer to figure her out ).
She shows her confidence by coming to sit by me more often. Pretty much every night she will jump up on the couch now. It took her almost 2 weeks to get to that point. She also shows her confidence by following the house routine. She knows when it is time to go to bed, time to get up, time to eat but most of all she know when it is TREAT TIME! She knows the sit command very well and sits for her treat. Well, she sort of wiggles and sits. She gets very excited about treat time. She does love treats so much that she will try to take them from the other dogs if they take too long to finish and THAT doesn’t work out well let me tell you. Pretty easy to deal with by making sure the other dogs get theirs first and have a 5 second head start. Thus the wiggling as she tries to wait patiently for hers. 😉
Lucy is also showing confidence in her new environment by being a little playful. She will jump around a little and shake her head at you to show she is feeling playful. Really cute.
The toy basket has been a big hit. She will dig through and find a bone she likes. Walk to the rug and look at it. Then back to the basket, dig for another bone , walk it to the carpet, look at it and so on until she finds just the right one and will lay down to chew on it.
Well, there has been another toy event this week. There are these balls that will roll themselves around. Lucy LOVED it. Well… maybe she hated it… either way she was ON IT! That ball was NOT getting away. She would not rest until the furry cover was off and she was sure it was “ DEAD”! Thank goodness it came with replacement covers😂 Makes me wonder if those cat toys with a feather on the end you can wave would work on Lucy. Hmmmmm. Might be fun to try.
So Lucy is a strong headed girl. She is a bulldog after all. When told it is time to go outside, she will not go out unless SHE thinks it is time to go out. At first I made her go every time because I just didn’t know her well enough yet and didn’t know how long she could go between visits outside. I would have to put on her leash and give her a tug before she would get up to go. She had a couple of accidents at night so I wasn’t confident she could hold it for long periods. Well after giving her grace a couple of times on the mid night peeing In the house, I marched her over to her pee spot and told her “No,No pee pee in the house!” Well, that was it. She hasn’t peed in the house since! I also figured out she would come willingly to go outside once she was ready, so I quit forcing her to go out when she didn’t want to. We have all come to an understanding. It isn’t just Lucy that had to figure things out….
So, Lucy is a sweet and very smart girl. I can’t wait for you to meet her!
10/15/2018 Update:
10/8/2018 Update: Hello everyone! My name is a Lucy. I am kind of shy, so, umm, forgive me please if I am, ummm, quiet. This week has been kind of scary for me. I have had several long car rides with people I never met before. They were all so nice, and I love going for rides, but I just don’t understand what is happening. Then I went to the doctor and they were really nice too, but for some reason I went to sleep and when I woke up my tummy was sore and like magic my awful long toenail were short again! I can’t tell you what a relief it was to not have curled toe nails poking into my foot pads.
So, ummm, then the next day I got to go on another car ride with another new person. Where are all these nice people coming from? I was pretty happy about another car ride though! This lady said I had didn’t know it yet but that I had hit the jack pot. What does that mean?🤔 We got to a house I had never been to before and I met a new furry friend. Then I met another furry friend. And then a third furry friend! I sniffed them a little and let them sniff me. I was still very nervous about what exactly was happening so I just kind of stayed to myself.
That night I had a bed to sleep on that was like a big fluff ball. I liked that a lot and it was in a wire thing that I have heard humans call a kennel. I liked that because then I knew nothing could sneak up on me. I was still pretty nervous which makes me pant. In the middle of the night it all kind of caught up with me and I really started panting pretty bad, so the new lady got on the floor next to me and patted my head and told me what a good girl I was. That made me feel better and I was able to sleep after that.
Unfortunately, I was panting so much that it was making me really thirsty and I drank so much that I really had to pee and just couldn’t hold it any more. I just didn’t know what to do in this new place so I found a spot outside of the bedroom and peed. When the people woke up they told me “no,no pee pee in the house” and then they wanted me to go outside. I hung my head down because I knew better and was pretty embarrassed.
So I have to admit that I REALLY don’t like going outside unless I REALLY need to go. When the new lady tells me I need to go out, I just lay down and roll on my back so she gets the message. She laughs so hard at me but then she gets the leash which lets me know she means business. So I have to give in and go outside. I have discovered that it’s really not that bad because she stays with me and talks with a sweet voice when I do my business. I just don’t like being outside by myself so I am really glad she stays with me.
Last night I felt so much more relaxed now that I know the humans and my furry friends are nice. This time I was able to hold my pee until the humans were up and took me outside so no embarrassing moments so far today.
I have even discovered they have a chair that is SO comfortable! They put a really soft blanket on it for me and I think I am going to stay on it all day!
I am not a young chicken any more so I do enjoy a nice soft place to lie down. I have noticed that I don’t hurt as much as I used to. Maybe because my foot pads aren’t hurting from nails digging into them? Maybe because of the drops that are being put in my food? All I know is I don’t hurt as much and that is very nice.
I do want to say thank you to all the nice people at the place with all the loud things I heard them call “Harley’s”. They made me jump a couple of times but for the most part I really liked it here because of all the attention. I am too shy to go up and beg for attention like some dogs, so it is really nice when someone comes to me and pets me without me having to ask.
Well, I know I am taking a lot about myself so please forgive me but it has been one of those weeks. The nice lady has told me that I will get a forever family one day that will love me just the way I am. I guess that’s what a jack pot is? If so, then a jack pot would be really nice.
10/3/2018 Update:
Please welcome Lucy to the No Borders Bulldog Rescue family. Lucy is a 5 year old female English Bulldog that weighs 47lbs.
Lucy came to NBBR as an owner surrender (kind of). Actually, Lucy was abandoned at the workplace of a known animal lover. The family already had 20 pets and knew they could not keep Lucy long term. So they took Lucy in and began trying to find a good home for her. After several days, they decided to contact NBBR and ask if we would help find Lucy a home. Once again in true NBBR fashion, the Bulldog that needed help was several hours away from where she needed to be. Not to fear, a NBBR volunteer was able to pick up Lucy and help transport her from her initial location to the DFW area where she visited our clinic.
Upon arrival to the DFW area, Lucy’s first stop was the clinic where she got a checkup. Lucy did not arrive with any vet records so she needed to be updated on all of her vaccines. It was also determined she needed to be spayed as well. In addition to some typical Bulldog afflictions (an ear infection) and what looks like arthritis Miss Lucy got a clean bill of health. She was scheduled for her spay and after a quick overnight stay, she was ready to meet her foster family. She did leave the clinic with a small bag of medicine that will be used for her arthritis and the ear infections.
Once at her foster family, Lucy was a little nervous at first but warmed up after she felt comfortable. She is currently getting some much needed R&R after a very exhausting week. Stay tuned for more on Miss Lucy as she gets settled with her foster family. Once she has been released by the clinic from her medical hold she will begin her search for the perfect (for her) forever home.
