7/29/2017 Update: Kirby (now Layla) was ADOPTED!!! We are so excited to announce that Miss Layla has found her forever family.

Layla has had a bumpy beginning to her short live…literally.  She was literally bounced off a trampoline and broke her shoulder. Her previous family took her to the vet for treatment. When they found out the cost, they asked to the veterinary staff to euthanize her.  The staff was not going to let that happen. That was 3 months ago.  Layla had surgery on her shoulder, and spent almost two solid months on crate rest, which is not an easy feat for a 5 month old Bulldog puppy.  Layla required many trips to the clinic for checkups and x-rays.

Layla’s new Mom was one of the volunteers that helped nurse Layla back to health. During these interactions, Layla and her new Mom formed a bond that was immediately apparent.  Layla’s Mom actually was interested in adopting a French Bulldog, but the more time she spent with Layla she knew that the wild little English Bulldog had taken a piece of her heart and she needed Layla to join her family.  All of us at NBBR are so excited for Kirby and her Mom as they set out on their journey together. Congratulations to the entire family.

6/11/2017 Update:   Kirby is doing great and is recovering from her surgery perfectly! She recently had her 4 week post-surgery x-ray’s and the vet was very happy with how the bone was healing! Only 2 more weeks of limited activity and then this pup can run around like crazy lol. She cannot wait!

Potty training is also going extremely well and she has her routine down precisely. When we go out, she loves waiting for the elevator and as soon as it opens, she walks right in. Sometimes she gets to say hi to other dogs and people in the elevator, which is her favorite. If someone walks by, she automatically wants a little belly rub and some attention from them 🙂

We have also mastered “sit” and “wait”, but she would probably do anything for a treat! She’s such a good little girl, extremely smart and a tad sassy.

Kirby says hi to everyone and wishes them a great week! Here she is sitting for a treat and hanging out with her toys.

6/1/2017 Update: Kirby has had her stitches our and first round of follow-up X-rays.  Everything is healing properly and Ms. Kirby is on her way to a complete recovery.  She has another 30 days of R & R before she goes back to the clinic for a final health signoff.

The biggest challenge currently is keeping Kirby calm and resting. She is a bundle of energy and is ready to run, play and explore her surroundings.  She is allowed to exercise a little more now, but has to take it easy so that her bones can completely heal.

5/14/2017 Update:  Kirby has been doing really well the past week! Her leg no longer has any swelling and the stitches are coming out this week. She absolutely cannot wait to run around and act like a the puppy she is. This girl has A LOT of energy and wants to run around so badly. She loves to chew on her toys, bones, blankets and just about anything else she can reach! She’s very sweet, but also has a sassy little bulldog personality.

5/8/2017 Update:  It’s Kirby, checking in for the first time here! I’m happy to report that I’m doing well and healing up as quickly as I can. With me being a puppy it’s extremely frustrating that I can’t run around and play like I want to or like other puppies. I’d love to be able to go up to other dogs and play with them, but I know that I’m not supposed to since I just had surgery. My foster mom is always trying to make me relax so I can let my leg heal, but I never want to. I love playing with my toys and chewing on them, and I also enjoy chasing around people’s feet and chewing on those also:)

My foster mom nicknamed me Sumo, because I LOVE to eat and she says I’m a little chunk. I can be lovable at times and I do give good kisses. I’m doing better with potty training since being here, mainly because I know I get a treat if I do! My foster mom carries me outside to potty since I am not supposed to walk much right now…I get the royal treatment around here haha.
Until next time,

5/2/2017 Update:  Please welcome Kirby welcome to the No Borders Bulldog Rescue family. Kirby is a 4 month old female English Bulldog that weighs 20 lbs.

Kirby has a had a very short but eventful 4 months to her young life. Kirby was purchased by a family with the intention of being a family pet.  Everything was going well until last Saturday when the family’s kids and Kirby were left alone in the backyard.  Kirby and the kids were all on the trampoline having fun until Kirby was bounced off the trampoline and landed on the ground. It was immediately apparent that she had broken something and was taken to their vet.  Upon going to the vet it was determine that Kirby had fractured her left front elbow and would require surgery. This is when things went south for Kirby. The family decided that they did not want to spend the money and asked the vet to euthanize Kirby.  That is when the Vet Tech helping Kirby sprung into action, she asked the family to sign Kirby over to her and she would ensure that Kirby would get the care she needed. The family agreed.  Kirby’s guardian angel knew that she wouldn’t be able to afford the necessary care so she called NBBR to see if we would be able to help.

Yesterday Kirby was taken to our clinic to see what exactly needed to be done. After an additional round of x-rays it was determined that because of her age and her fracture it would be best to take her to an orthopedic surgeon to handle her case.  First thing today Kirby had her consultation with the orthopedic surgeon, after a physical exam and reviewing the x-rays it was determined that Kirby would need two pins and a screw in her elbow to save her form losing her leg.  The surgery was completed this afternoon and she is recovering well. She will spend the evening at the Surgery Center so that they can monitor her recovery  throughout the night. If all goes as expected Kirby will be released to her foster home to recuperate. Recuperation will consist of 6-8 weeks of strict crate rest. (If Kirby doesn’t get this strict crate rest there is a chance her condition could worsen). After her crate rest is complete she will require physical therapy to help gain normal range of motion in her bionic leg

Kirby is a complete puppy. She was not happy that she was told she would have to wait to see the specialist. Even with a broken elbow she wanted to greet every dog and human that walked through the door. She is also very found of giving kisses.  Please keep Kirby in your thoughts and prayers as she begins her road to a complete recovery. Obviously she will be medial hold for at least 2.5 months but will then be rarin’ to find her new forever home.
