3/10/2023 Update:
Charlie was ADOPTED!!!!
Charlie joined the NBBR family as an owner surrender. For a 3 yr old guy (soon to be 4), Charlie has had a bumpy ride. Charlie has already had two families. Charlie’s most recent family had him for approximately 2 years. They got him from a family friend that didn’t want him any longer. Things were good until the grandbaby arrived. As the grandbaby grew the problems grew as well. They decided that it would be best if Charlie found a new forever home. Even though Charlie was well cared for with his previous family, his first stop after meeting our NBBR volunteer was the clinic. He arrived up to date on his shots. We did a quick checkup, a recheck of his Heartworm status and a fecal exam. All came back negative, and Charlie was good to go. One item that we had been evaluating was allergies. Charlie’s previous family stated that he was due to get his shot. Dr. H prescribed some medication for him to take while we investigated the nature of his allergies (seasonal, environmental, food related). After a quick overnight stay at the clinic, Charlie was ready to join his foster family.
Charlie’s forever family occurred when his foster Mom had a very busy schedule that included a wedding with a lot of strangers (not good for Charlie). In addition to the wedding, Charlie’s foster Mom was going to have to be out of town for several weeks which would require boarding (not good for Charlie). So instead of boarding Mr. C during this time, we asked another foster if she would be willing to “temporarily” foster Charlie until things calmed down. Foster Mom # 2 already had a Frenchie and had previously met Charlie, but she was somewhat concerned that a change in living arrangements could possibly be very detrimental. We proceeded with caution and was pleasantly surprised when Charlie and his new foster (soon to be forever) sister got along FAMOUSLY. It was love at first sight and like all good romances both pups brought out the best in the other. Charlie looks to his sister to help him calm down. If sister says its ok, then Charlie is good. This has helped him with his lack of trust for strangers. In turn, Charlie brings out the puppy in his new sister, where she used to be a couch potato, she is now romping and playing with Charlie. Sometimes things don’t work out like we want but they work out like they should. Charlie might not have found a perfect forever home, but he found the forever home that is perfect for him. Congratulations to the entire family.
2/4/2023 Update:
Oh boy!! I sure did love getting to explore all the ice! I didn’t like that I couldn’t go for my walks (even though I tried my hardest to stay out there!!). It was even better because I got to spend five whole days snuggled up with my bestie and my foster aunt! We watched movies, napped and played so much! My bestie and I have become inseparable! We have been snuggling so much and playing our little frenchie hearts out!! My foster momma sent over some new fun toys! I think my bestie and I broke the record for the shortest amount of time with a toy! As soon as we started playing all this fluffy stuff came out! And let me tell you, that box and all that fluff was just as fun as the new toys! I am still being super sneaky and stealing socks, I do give them back after a few laps around the apartment, and staring into my aunties soul so she plays with me!
1/29/2023 Update:
I am really trying to teach my auntie that breakfast time is when I wake her up with snorts and kisses in her ear. But if she tells me to go lie down I do! I have been getting so comfy cozy here! I am enjoying all of the ear scratches and snuggles. My bestie and I have been getting along so well! I really am the perfect little gentleman. My bestie will nudge me with a toy until I play with her. We are having so much fun! I am still loving all the walks, I have learned to sit my wiggly booty down while the harness is being put on. I still do all the wiggles and flips to the door because I’m just so excited for a new adventure! I always do a great job on the leash (I am still learning to not pull). We just breeze on past the other people and pups
1/22/2023 Update:
Hey guys! Charlie here, or char beans as my foster auntie likes to call me. She is always laughing at me, she says I’m such a goofy boy! I have been doing so well pulling less on my walks. I have also learned that it really like whipped cream! We have been getting it in the mornings, after I have to wake everyone up. I know exactly how to get just what I want! I know I am not allowed to eat from my besties bowl…. So I barked at it until my auntie took it down and I flipped it around until I got all four of those kibble pieces left behind! And look at my handsome new bow tie!
1/15/2023 Update:
Another great week in the books for me! New toys, lots of play time and snuggles with my bestie! I was able to fit all 3 of my new toys in my mouth to play keep away! I have really been enjoying all of my walks, and I have been so good when passing other people. I know where the food is kept, so whenever I feel hungry I just give a little whine to get more snacks! Works every time!
1/8/2023 Update:
I have had quite an adventurous week! Lots of walks, new people doing construction, snuggles, play time and some awesome naps! I have done so great adjusting to all of the new sounds with the construction! My bestie and I have been on patio patrol now that the weather is nicer! I love sitting in the swing, watching people and dogs go by.
1/1/2023 Update:
My besties mom keeps saying I have such a huge personality! I have been sneaking bones away from my bestie, and alerting her mom when it is time for food! I am really loving playing keep away! It’s such a fun game!! I have REALLY been enjoying the heated blanket too! I tried out the patio swing with my bestie this week, I liked being with my friends, but I’m not so sure about the swing part. I have been loving all of the new toys and smells all around here!
12/25/2022 Update:
HEY! Merry Christmas everyone! I have been staying inside and keeping warm with this super chilly weather! My bestie and I have been snuggling, and they even put some cozy sweaters on me! I was such a good boy when they were putting my sweaters on! I have been playing and snuggling non stop! I just love my toys SOOOO MUCH!! Santa brought us so many toys and I could t choose just one! Also my bestie was kind enough to let me steal her bone!
12/17/2022 Update:
I got to spend a whole week with my bestie! I am LOVING being able to get three, yes, THREE walks a day, I am still missing my big yard but this will do! I have had a great time playing and getting lots of snuggles! My foster auntie said I am such a good boy! I have adjusted so well already! See ya next week!

Hi Frens! Charlie here. I been having a good week. It rainy but I hav lots of toys inside so I ok. I happy each mornin when I wakes up a finds a morning toy. I do a little jump and twist to show foster mom I happy.
I luv meal time! I hav my special blue bowl and my food hav to be in that bowl and has to be in my spot. If my special bowl not in my spot I stare at it til foster mom move to right place.
Gues wat??? Last week I get to go see a fren! She cute blond Frenchie and we hav so much fun! She like keep away game just like me! She also like snuggles and we each take a side of her mom. She nice to share her mom. She kinda like me. What can I say? She so excited I there she wake up 4:00 am to play! Her Mom take us for lots of walks. I LUV walks jus like I luv treats.
Dis week foster mom put up tree inside with lights. I sniff it some but no treats on it so I don’t know why it there. Then she put boxes under it but they don’t smell like treats so I not impressed.
I do have suspicions though. Foster mom bring in bag and hide it from me. I pretty sure there at toys in it so I follow her but she put up high so I can’t sniff it. Hmmmm. I keep my eye on that.
Do you have tree with lights? Do you have toys for me too??

8/16/2022 Update:
Things to know about Charlie:
- He is adorable as you can see!
- Charlie loves plush toys and bouncy balls. He also like a good marrow bone for a treat. When he gets a new plush toy he will carry it everywhere with him including to bed.
- Charlie will play catch some. He will bring the ball to you when ready to play! Some times he will just toss the ball to himself and chase it around.
- Charlie likes pats on the head from people he knows but doesn’t care much for back scratches except in rare instances. If he doesn’t know someone they need to proceed with caution if they decide to pet his head. He will snap. Typically a warning snap but if someone wasn’t careful they could get bit.
- Because of that he needs a home with no young children and adults with patience for him to get comfortable.
- Once Charlie bonds then he is a precious boy with his family. Charlie is a shadow. He loves having human company and really loves a lap of one is available.
- Charlie loves his food and meal time! He takes allergy meds once a day but no other health issues.
- Charlie loves walks when it is cool enough.
- Charlie heats up pretty quickly so you just have to make sure he doesn’t over do outside play. So far he knows when he is too hot and will go back inside until he cools off.
- Charlie is super smart. He can follow what you are saying and learns to recognize words pretty quickly.
- Charlie is 100% house broken and does fine when left at home unsupervised loose in the house. He has no destructive behaviors. He does NOT like anything that keeps him from his people if they are home. We haven’t tried a crate but haven’t needed to. Not sure how he would do with one. He uses a dog door but if a home didn’t have one he would be fine if let out every few hours. He has been kept in homes with no dog door with no issue.
- Charlie prefers to sleep in bed with his people but also has done well on a dog bed if in the same room with people that have watched him. Would not be good in a home where someone wanted to keep him in a room at night without his family.
- Charlie gets along well with other dogs if introduced slowly to one dog at a time. He is not alpha and will avoid a dog if they are aggressive with him. He will, however, jump in if his pack is being harassed. He protects his own!
- No idea how he would be with cats but suspect he might do ok if carefully introduced.
Charlie has a lot of love to give and would make a wonderful addition to an adult or adult and later teen family.
7/10/2022 Update:
Story time for you to see how smart Charlie is.
Thursday night we had bone~in steaks so after dinner each of the dogs got a bone with some meat left on it. It was a beautiful
Evening so we sat out with them while they chewed on their bones. Happy doesn’t do justice to how the dogs felt in that moment. After a bit of time had passed Charlie kept going to the door and to the side gate that leads to a dog door. He went back and forth between the two until I realized he wanted to go in. I opened the gate to the side yard so he could come and go as he wanted. I thought maybe he wanted water after chewing on the bone. He was gone just a short amount of time and then rejoined us a while later we went in for the night and we noticed that only one dog still had a bone. I assumed they had eaten all the marrow and chewed them down to nothing.
The next night we again went out to sit on the same porch area. Soon after we sat Charlie was barking and trying to stick his nose under a small fence to the side yard where the dog door is located. I was scared he had spotted a snake after the snake incident we had last week. I gingerly approached and looked all around the base of the fence. Charlie continued to stare intently at one spot and try to reach under the fence with his paw. Finally, seeing no snake I opened the gate and he dashed around and pawed at the area and then quickly grabbed a dark object in his mouth and dashed back out to the grassy area. He started chewing on it intently so now I was concerned with what he was chewing. Was it a large piece of mulch? Was it some hard backed creature? I approached and he clamped down on it in his mouth with no intention of giving it up. Finally after a few chomps I realized it was his bone from the night before!!!! He had hidden it in the side yard mulch to save for later! He has access to that side yard all day so I don’t know why he waited until we were with him to retrieve it. Maybe he wanted to save it for family porch sitting time? We will never fully know what goes on in Charlie’s mind but he is a smart little fellow and know exactly what he wants!
5/24/2022 Update:
Ahhhh! Green grass finally! There is nothing better than belly to the ground and pulling myself across the grass with my chicken legs out flat behind me! Then I flip over and squirm to rub my back on the grass.
I love being outside but we had some scary excitement this week on the back porch one night! A snake came for a visit! Me and my pack were sniffing and sniffing when it struck at me and my fur buddy and we jumped back fast like the athletes we are (and scared boys). My fur girlfriend wasn’t as fast and that mean snake bit her on the head! Then a big fur friend that was staying with us rushed in for an attack and she got bit on the nose! Finally foster mom investigated why we were all bumping and sniffing around her and she jumped so high and ran for the door calling us!!! We had had enough so we all followed her straight inside.
My fur girls had to go for a ride in the car and they didn’t come back til the next morning smelling like the doctors office. They were pretty sleepy so we had a slow day after they got back. They are both good now!
Hard to top the excitement of that day so the rest of the week has been boring in comparison. I just enjoyed playing with my toys. This week I started playing with my onside ball again. I carry it around and then take to foster mom so she can throw it for me.
I have been liking being petted a whole lot more. I let foster mom and dad pet me and scratch my back. It’s pretty nice! I like it when people come over too because foster mom always gives me a treat when people come over. I don’t let them pet me much but I like being around them.
That’s all the news for this week!
5/16/2022 Update:
I now have a new rule. If foster mom doesn’t come outside with me that means it’s too hot. She opens the door and I walk out but she stays in so I turn right around and walk right back through that door. Just saying. It’s HOT! And then there is the fact that I am kind of a Cling-on. I like being with my people. Ain’t gonna lie.
I haven’t been grumpy with foster mom in a long time but yesterday she sat in the chair where I was and she bumped my butt! I jumped up growling and let her know that wasn’t ok. She just sat there and looked at me like I had lost my mind. Geesh. I get no respect! It took me a minute to gather myself and then I snuggled in next to her. I just can’t stay mad at her and snuggle at the same time so I pick my battles.
I think today my favorite toy will be stuffed kitty. Mmmmm but then again I haven’t played with red rubber toy in a while. I will probably sort through the toys again just to make sure.
I sure hope we don’t have to do border patrol much today. However if my pack decides it is important and they take off on full alert, then I have their back! I am not a leader but I darn sure am a good follower!!
Well, gotta go chill out!
5/6/2022 Update:
Charlie is a hard working dog. He comes to work with his foster mom every day ( home office) . He makes sure She stays on task by sitting on her lap so she stays in place and gets things done!! Charlie is pretty much a constant companion. He follows his foster mom every where. If you want a shadow dog Charlie is your guy!
Charlie has gotten more and more relaxed with his foster family petting him. He still doesn’t want anyone new touching him even though he greets them with a lot of exuberance! He isn’t an ankle biter at all so as long as new people keep their hands away from him all is good. His foster home is a home office with clients and co workers coming by on a regular basis. He is quite excited at first but then settles down and lays by the group. Sometimes he will jump up and place his front paws on someone’s leg like he wants to be petted but then only allows a very brief pet before he snaps so guest just need a heads up. Because children wouldn’t be able to help themselves trying to pet him, he is not a good fit around children.
With his foster family, Charlie is precious and very affectionate. He wants to be with his family and fur friends all the time.
Charlie has always been perfectly house trained and in his foster home uses a dog door. He has never chewed in anything but his toys, but LOVES his toys!
Charlie is great at amusing himself. He will find a toy or bone and keep himself occupied. Sometimes he will bring a toy he wants you to throw for him, but typically that only lasts a few minutes.
The cutest thing he does is lay on his back and hold a toy over his head with his paws and play with it.
Charlie is such a gem and can’t wait for his forever family to find him!!
4/24/2022 Update:
This is a tale about the death of a sea sponge.
So Charlie is a bit is a shadow. He will follow you everywhere. Kitchen, laundry room, office, and yes, the bathroom. He seems to be particularly fascinated with the shower. He will sit on the mat by the shower and wait for me to get out. Frequently he will go in the shower after I get out to sniff around. What is he looking for? Does he want to make sure I didn’t leave something in there?
So the other night as we were going to bed I noticed he had something in his mouth that I didn’t recognize. It was the sea sponge from the shower! So now it is game on with me trying to get it and him playing keep away. Apparently a sea sponge is a high value item to Charlie because he was NOT going to give it up. After a while I gave up the chase and went to sleep.
The next morning the poor sea sponge remains were all over Charlie’s bed. It had been torn into tiny pieces.
AT least now I know what he was looking for in the shower!
Charlie is always looking for a game. Keep away is a big favorite but he also likes fetch when in the mood. One of the things that he does is lay on his back and “hold” a toy with his front paws over his head to play. He will leverage himself against the side of the couch to make it easier to stay on his back. I have always seen videos of Frenchies “holding” things with their front paws but neither of mine have ever done it. Charlie does and is so cute!
So Charlie still wants to jump at visitors hands, but quickly settles down. We still tell visitors to not pet him, but he will tolerate a quick pat in the head.
With his foster family and frequent visitors he does seem to enjoy some petting, and even leans into it and seems to ask for it some, but he just doesn’t like a lot of it. If he doesn’t know I am going to touch him he even flinches. He is just super sensitive about contact. Don’t take that to mean he doesn’t like to snuggle because he does! If I am sitting he wants to be in my lap. He gives kisses too!
Does Charlie sound like a good fit for you?
4/17/2022 Update:
My tummy is so happy! Foster Mom has been busy in the kitchen all day and making the house smell wonderful! Finally the humans ate (while I waited patiently at their feet) and that is my clue to hang close and not leave the room for a second! The scraping of plates is like music to my ears. Foster mom had to wipe my jowls because the drool starts as soon as I knew something yummy was headed my way! Finally she feeds us a bite one at a time, but the big moment is when Foster Dad loads some bits into our bowls!!! My patience paid off! Now it’s tv and nap time. Foster Mom always knows where I am because I am like a fine tuned machine making my snoring noise.
It’s nice to have a lazy day after a very busy day yesterday. I had a lot of supervising to do because we had some new men here. They were very busy digging holes and filling them with green growing things. I had to make sure they did everything right so I laid in the grass watching or walked around and sniffed at things. All of a sudden this strange dangerous weapon showed up!!! It had long metal fingers at the end of a long pole and they were dragging it across the dirt! ! Attack!!! I barked and jumped and nipped at it before it attacked me!! I have to say I did a good job because the man finally realized the danger and leaned it against the house! Whew! What would they do without me??
So I finally trained Foster Mom to put a comfy dog bed on their bed for me to sleep in at night. It has nice sides on it I can snuggle my nose into or lay my head on. Now I have my special place to sleep between them and no one bumps me. So glad she finally figured that one out. Geesh. It’s hard training these humans.
Well, I have to take a nap now. Zzzzzzzzz
Yours Truly,
Charlie.
3/28/2022 Update:
I would be happy if I never had to go for another car ride the rest of my life!
So the other day foster mom grabbed my leash and headed for the door. WALK!!! We’re going for a walk!! Out the door we go and then she stops and opens the truck door. What?????NOOOOOOO!!!! I quickly dash out to the farthest corner with Foster Mom hot on my short stubby tail. She is talking all sweet stuff but I know where this is headed! She gets near and I am headed the other way. I finally dash to the door hoping she will just forget the whole thing and just let me back inside, but no such luck. She scoops me up and pops me in the truck. Humph I think to myself. This stinks. I don’t know where she is taking me but this can’t be good. A little later we get there and I can’t jump out fast enough. When it is time to go I jump right up in the truck because I want to go HOME!!! I am so not into this that I won’t even give foster mom kisses until I am out of the darn truck. You just never know where you will go so my policy is just STAY HOME!
I almost forgot to tell you about strawberries!! And apples!!! Yum, yum and yum!!!! If you have any you want to share I will be your best friend!!! I will even sit before you have to ask me! I dream with visions of strawberries dancing in my head. Wow, I wish I had some right now. Can you help a Frenchie out?
I got to stay a couple of nights at a new persons house this week. They had lots of dogs for me to play with. There was one pretty German Short hair female that was my favorite! I liked the people pretty well too. I let them pet me some and they talked sweet to me. I even got to go on a great walk which I really liked. I sure was glad to see Foster Mom when she came to get me though!
That’s all the news for this week! I am off to do border patrol along the fence with my foster buddies!
3/20/2022 Update:
I am soooo mad at my foster parents!! They were so mean to me this week! Someone please adopt me!!! So here’s what happened.
Foster Dad came home with all kinds of food in his truck. Then there was a big crackly bag that sure got my attention! Then he opened it! Then out came glorious huge rawhide bones! I went crazy with joy! Foster Dad gave one to each of us but I am smarter than the average Frenchie so in no time at all I had them all!!! Hahahaha (insert evil laugh here). And then…… Foster Mom came home 🤬. She is all happy and then she sees THE BAG and off went the alarm! She is loud talking to Foster Dad and telling him “NO, they can’t have those”! WHAT??? Looks like I need to improve my defensive position! Knowing Foster Mom I had to protect my stash in a hurry!! I tried to carry all three somewhere safe but they were just too big. In my rush to safety I made the only choice I could and got 2 of them into my jaws and went looking for a good defensive position. Foster Mom saw me make a dash and was hot on my paws. Quick! Into the hallway I scurried to limited her options for points of attack!! My ears went flat back on my head so she would know I meant business!! “Don’t come any closer! BACK OFF!!! ” I growled with my big Frenchie growl!
Ummm why is foster mom laughing??? I am serious and she is laughing at me???
Now she goes outside with the other dogs and calls me to join in the fun, but No Ma’am! I am not falling for that! Then they were having so much fun I decided I would take my bones with me to watch them outside. “Back off!” I growled again. My foster siblings knew I meant business and didn’t get too close. Foster mom kept trying to get me to leave the bones to play but NO WAY! Then I saw a gleam in her eye. Uh oh. She smiled so sweetly and next thing I know she has my favorite TREATS in her hand and my foster siblings are all lined up right inside the door where I can see them. What to do??? Bones… treats…bones….treats….
TREATS!!!! I run fast to make sure she still has one for me and it is DELICIOUS!!! Ahhhh and now the moment when I realize I have been outsmarted. Foster Dad closes the door with him and the bones outside and me on the inside.
AHHHHHGGGGGRRRRRR! I feel like Charlie Brown when he falls for the old football trick!!!
So do you see why I am mad! What a torture they put me through!!!
Ok, I can’t stay mad for long. The treat was really awesome. Next thing I know I am snuggled in her lap and all is forgotten. Sort of. If I get my chops on another rawhide I will be smarter next time! Who cares if it’s dangerous for me? It’s delicious!!!
Other than that the week has been good. I love ALL my toys ans sometimes have a hard time decide if which one to play with! I follow Foster Mom everywhere because I really do like her and like being around her.
This week Foster Mom had some “clients” over and for the first time I got to go with everyone to the upstairs office! I made sure I was a good boy and hung out while they talked a lot. Foster Mom told them not to pet me so I didn’t get bothered. It was nice just to hang out though!
So how was your week? Did you apply for any of us fosters yet???? We know you are out there!
3/14/2022 Update:
Hi there! Charlie here! I can’t wait to tell you about my new ball!!! It is a soccer ball for dogs so more of a “paw-ccer” ball! I can push it with my chest and run around like a real soccer player! I can also grab it with my teeth and run around with it! I can lay on my back and hold it up with my front paws! I can drop on foster mom’s lap and she can throw it for me! It is just straight up fun!
It was actually a big week because I also got a new stuffed green dinosaur!! One of my foster moms volunteer friends knows how much I loved the first one she gave me so she sent me another one! I pretty much jumped so high when I saw it all paws came off the floor! I grabbed it and tore off for the other room trying to keep it all for myself and not share with my fur friends. I took it to bed with me and slept with it all night. It made me sooo happy!
This weekend my foster people left and when they came back they had people with them. I jumped up and was all exited. I heard foster mom tell them to not pet me because I don’t like new people touching me. Well, one of the ladies bent over and petted me. I was ok for about 10 seconds and then I snapped and growled at her to tell her I am just not that kind of dog. Once no one was touching me I was happy to hang out with the group. They stayed up past my bedtime so I crashed once we finally got to bed.
I really feel safe with my foster family so I let them pet me some and kind of like it. If I fall into a deep sleep and they pet me I forget who I am with and when I feel someone touching me I jump up to snap and snarl. I feel pretty bad once I realize who was touching me, but I was asleep so you can’t blame me completely, right? I sleep next to them and snuggle and they move around at night and touch or bump me but for some reason that doesn’t startle me. I just really like being with them all the time. My favorite is on a lap or right next to their legs or feet at night. I even like my foster people so much I lick their face. That’s pretty much my seal of approval. Foster Mom calls me “her shadow” whatever that means. I just don’t want her out of my site!
Gotta go play with some toys now!
3/6/2022 Update:
So, do you like to sleep in? Do you need a furry alarm clock? Charlie will typically sleep until we all get up and always sleeps til our standard wake up time. On occasion I wake to a handsome grey face staring at me waiting for me to wake up but he is just quietly waiting 😂 Other times he starts to crawl all over me giving me the clue it is time to get up. Then he moves to the end of the bed and waits for me to lift him to the floor. No matter how much he is ready to start the day he won’t leave his fur siblings and waits til they also get down so they can all go potty together.
This week Charlie has come a long way with letting us pet him more. He still has moments when it is too much for him but his snap is more of a warning than a real attempt to bite. He craves attention and actually seems to enjoy the pets. Sometimes if he isn’t expecting me to touch him he jumps or flinches when touched. He seems to be hyper sensitive to touch. He doesn’t act like he thinks he is going to be hit. He is just sensitive to touch.
As mentioned before Charlie likes to retrieve. His foster fur brother is a regular retriever and very fast. At first Charlie could never get to the ball first. Now with some practice he is getting faster and sometimes manages to get to the ball first! When he doesn’t feel like competing we have to thrown a separate ball for him. I think he is secretly in training to win!
So yesterday Foster Dad walked in with an empty M and M clear plastic container and Charlie started jumping to try and get it. Foster Dad handed it to him and it was game on! He grabbed it and started running around with it and tossing it. He played with it for hours, chewing and tossing and asking us to throw it for him! An unexpected fun afternoon that Charlie cleverly created!
2/27/2022 Update:
Charlie IS A French Bulldog that sometimes identifies as an English Bulldog. For instance:
One ear flops
Has a face like Winston Churchill.
He snores
He snorts
He farts and toots
He drools
He likes his naps especially if it is in a lap.
He loves food
He will follow you like a shadow
Listens when it’s convenient
He is utterly adorable either way! This week Charlie has been giving his foster mom plenty of kisses. Charlie is getting more and more relaxed in his foster home, his funny personality is coming out and he seems to enjoy some petting now.
Charlie has learned to wait at the table until the family is done eating and then he knows he will get some. Ok, he is not perfect yet as he still jumps up to put his paws on the table edge, but he is waiting longer! He takes all treats super gentle.
Charlie loves going to work. If foster mom is working at her computer he loves if she picks him up to sit in her lap while she is working. Stuffed animals are a favorite toy, but bones, balls and tug of war all get his attention as well.
If you are new to reading about Charlie please be sure to read all previous posts as he needs a home with no children and few visitors. He is great with other dogs but does have issues with being petted by people that will have to be worked on. The reward of love from this adorable and funny little fellow will be worth it but he will take some work and patience.
2/20/2022 Update:
Charlie got his first bath/shower this week! He wasn’t happy about it but never snapped and let me scrub him and towel him off!
So, I can’t decide if he should be called Sir Charles, Prince Charles or Mr Extra. He has certain ways he likes things and is figuring out how to train me.
Let me count the ways:
1. Toy bin must be full each morning and tipped over so his royal highness can sort through what will be the chosen toy of the morning. 2. If outside, Water needs to be served with water bowl tipped or preferably tipped enough to spill water if outside so he can lick it off the porch floor. If not, he will bark at the bowl and try to tip it with his paw by himself. As “the dog servant”, will get “the look” and a “bark” if you fail to see the signs and help him. If inside, he likes fresh water and the bowl to be full.
3. If he presents you with a toy, you must grasp the toy and play tug of war. Of course, sometimes he has another game in mind. If he presents a toy but won’t let you grab the toy, then that means the game of “keep away” is preferred at that moment.
4. He doesn’t like to dine alone. When presented with his food he will make eye contact to make sure you sit down with him as he dines. He won’t start eating until he knows you are there to observe his excellent manners. Also, his food must be served in his personal blue bowl. He can’t eat out of a “common” stainless bowl 🤣
5. At bedtime he will present himself as ready to be lifted onto the bed. Then in the morning he will wait until you lower him to the floor so he can walk to the door for you to open it (completely ignoring the fact that he has a dog door he can go out at any time). 6. Once said door has been opened, he waits for you to step out first to make sure it is safe for his royal highness to step foot outside.
7. Contact with his royal highness is only allowed on his terms. Any Handling needed to serve him is acceptable at all times. He wants to sit on you or by you most of the time and definitely wants to be in the same room as his foster family at all times. He desires contact and snuggles but don’t get forward and actually stroke or pet him more than a couple of times as that is considered forward 😂 He actually will allow his foster Dad to pet him on the head more than his foster mom. (traitor). So showers, ear cleaning, lifting, moving, snuggling, and lap time are all on the “Acceptable and expected Handling” category. Stroking, parting or scratching are in the ” don’t get too forward” category.
- All visitors are not trusted until proven otherwise and their hands are the evil that will be snapped if they get near him. Charlie is the Prince of this castle and beware to all those who enter. (FYI, he won’t snap at anything but fingers so no worries about ankles being nipped. ).
Whatever HRH wants, we are here to serve! 😂
So as not to end on a negative note, Charlie is precious and hilarious. He keeps me laughing with his funny personality. When I washed his plush toys, he was so excited when they came out of the dryer that he danced through the house with it held high. When given a chew he literally danced a little jig and hopped around in circles before bowing with tail end up in the air to worship his new chew toy. He then carried it around the house for 30 minutes or more in happy anticipation for the actually chew fest! His love of toys keeps me smiling every day.
Charlie is a great companion and just happy to be with his family and pack. Charlie would fit in with other dogs but could also be happy as a one and only.
2/14/20222 Update:
This week Charlie went with his new fur friends to “in home” boarding as his foster family had a trip out of town.
2/5/2022 Update:
Likes and dislikes According to Charlie.
I have never had a dog love toys as much as Charlie does. He loves them all! Each morning he has to tip the toy bin over so he can sort through them and tell them all “good morning”!
He does NOT want to be dressed up. No winter coats or cute outfits for him. He throws himself around making any attempt at dressing him impossible all the while giving you the “you are crazy lady and no way you are putting that on me” look.
Charlie loves doing Border Patrol with the pack. If one of the other dogs barks and takes off he jumps up and takes off no questions asked before joining the race to the fence or the front door. No dog left behind here.
Charlie does not like vacuum cleaners. According to Charlie they are evil and must die! If it is a Roomba I can distract him to leave it alone but a full size vacuum means full frontal assault.
Charlie loves cheese. He gets a small piece each morning with breakfast. (allergy medicine inside but don’t tell him)
As a reminder, Charlie does not like to be petted. Yep, I know. Kind of crazy. He seems to read it as aggression especially if there is eye contact involved. It could get better as he gets to know people better, but not pushing it with him for now. Very short one or two scratch or pats can be slipped in but beyond that he can feel threatened.
HOWEVER, Charlie does like to snuggle. He loves sitting in laps once he knows you and loves snuggling up with you in bed. Charlie is all about watching a good movie or tv show together. He enjoys contact as long as it isn’t in the form of hands petting him. A hand and / or arm resting on him while snuggled is accepted. He will even give you kisses and show you he likes you, but that doesn’t mean he wants a belly rub. He’s just not that kind of dog.
Charlie loves treats!!! He will sit for a treat and then run find a good place to snuggle in and enjoy it.
Charlie loves to have quiet time with a soft toy that he can “nurse”. He will have quiet time several times a day.
Charlie loves human food. He will beg at the table so we have been working on him learning to not jump on us to beg for food during dinner. He has gotten better already. Charlie is a very smart boy!
That’s it for this week! Charlie hopes his forever family or person is looking for him and ready to accept him and work with him. That perfect home with no children and minimal visitors is out there and will discover the love Charlie has to give!

1/20/2022 Update:
Please welcome Charlie to No Borders Bulldog Rescue. Charlie is a 3 yr. old male French Bulldog that weighs 32 lbs.
Charlie joins the NBBR family as an owner surrender.
One item that we are evaluating is allergies. Charlie’s previous family stated that he was due to get his shot. Dr. H prescribed some medication for him to take while we investigate the nature of his allergies (seasonal, environmental, food related). Once we have that information, we will know exactly how to best handle Mr. C’s treatment moving forward. After a quick overnight stay at the clinic, Charlie was ready to join his foster family.
Charlie or Mr. Charles if you are new to him. Charlie (like many rescued dogs) needs slow introductions. Some need slow introductions to people, and some to other animals. Charlie falls into the first category. He does well, but he needs time to adjust to his new surroundings and those who are trying to get to know him. It is best to let Charlie come to you on his terms and not prematurely invade his “space and bidness”. Once warm, Charlie is a lovebug. While doing Charlie’s welcome photoshoot, we seemed to get two types of pictures. The first was resting B face. For some “resting B face” has a certain connotation, but we are going to go with resting Bulldog face. Most of Charlie’s pictures looked like he was very angry and “not having it” even though that wasn’t was we saw in person. The second type of pictures we got were the, I look “B S Crazy” ones. These were complete with gigantic crazy eyes, tongue out and the look of complete insanity. Again, this isn’t Charlie either, so we are going to chalk this experience up to while Charlie is very handsome, he isn’t very photogenic. When he joined his foster home with other Frenchies, he quickly “fit right in”. He was a member of the pack in no time and joined them in running around the backyard and exploring. The past few days have been very tough on him. Imagine having everything you knew, turned upside down and having to start all over by yourself in a strange (but nice) place. According to his foster mom, she has a new shadow as Charlie is there all the time. For now, we already know that Charlie will need a home with NO children. Most likely, a calm, quiet home will be best for him. We will know more as he settles into his foster home. Stay tuned as we peel away the layers and learn what makes Mr. Charlie tick.
